Whereabouts

I was born in Italy, grew up in Viareggio, and studied Electronics Engineering at the Universita' degli Studi di Pisa.

From 1981 to 1989 I worked at CSELT (Centro Studi E Laboratori Telecomunicazioni) in Torino, Italy. Most of the people I worked with at CSELT are now part of Loquendo

In 1990 I moved to the United States. I was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories, in Murray Hill, New Jersey and then at AT&T Shannon Laboratories, in Florham Park, New Jersey.

From 1999 to 2003 I worked at SpeechWorks International (now Nuance)

From 2003 to 2005 I was a Research Staff Member and then manager at the IBM T.J.Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.

I am the CTO of SpeechCycle, formerly known as Tell-Eureka. SpeechCycle is located in Manhattan.

I was the chair of the IEEE Speech and Language Technical Committee (SLTC) for the term 2007-2008.

I am the Technical Program Chair of Interspeech 2011 which will be held in Florence, Italy on August 28-31, 2011.

I wrote a book on the history and technology of computers that understand speech. The title is “The Voice and the Machine.” It will be published by MIT Press sometimes in 2011 or early 2012.

Artistic photography is my current passion.
